SAN FRANCISCO ��It was a blockbuster year for the technology industry in 2013. The Nasdaq Composite Index surged more than 30% as the power of giants such as Google, Facebook and Twitter grew, while start-ups raised billions of dollars at increasingly lofty valuations. But it was not a great year for everyone.

��Nick D'Aloisio created an aggregation app called Summly from his bedroom and sold it in March to Yahoo for $30 million. He recently turned 18, so he was theoretically able to drink while in Paris as the star speaker this month at LeWeb, Europe's biggest tech conference. D'Aloisio is a product manager at Yahoo now and is reportedly looking at applying the Summly concept into fields like multimedia. D'Aloisio's rapid rise and sudden wealth show how Silicon Valley is back in a big, bubbly way. It also highlights how Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is on an acquisition spree to recruit talent that she hopes will change the company from a tech has-been to a nimble player in the fast-growing mobile and online video sectors.

    All in the family
    Cablevision� (NYSE: CVC  ) is family-controlled, so maybe nepotism is to be expected. Recently, in a bizarre turn of events, CEO James Dolan expanded the corporate responsibilities of his wife, Kristin. Although that sounds like a clear conflict of interest, it's a little stranger still since the company had disclosed that the couple had separated. Meanwhile, Dolan's brother-in-law, Brian Sweeney, has been awarded with a promotion to spearhead corporate strategy.

    If the market's had a great year in 2013, Discovery Communications (DISCA) has managed to do one better. Shares of the $30 billion TV broadcaster have rallied almost 32% year-to-date, stomping the performance of the S&P 500 by a wide margin.

    Still, investors hate this stock right now. With a short interest ratio of 10.7, it would take short sellers more than two weeks of buying at current volume levels to cover their positions.

    Discovery owns a handful of international cable TV channels, including the namesake Discovery Channel, TLC, Science Channel and Animal Planet, and positions in properties such as Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network, launched in 2011. Discovery's niche positioning gives it some big benefits -- the firm's channels focus on topics such as science, technology and history, and they're able to sell more targeted advertising as a result. That's helped push the firm's net margins far above those of more conventional network broadcasters.

    Discovery's channels are only part of the story. Content is king in the broadcast business, and so Discovery's 100,000 hour video library provides the firm with an extremely valuable asset -- especially now that streaming video firms such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) are falling all over themselves to license content.

    DISCA has some tailwinds at its back right now, and its hefty short interest gives it the potential to pop this summer.

    The deal is attractive enough to make even the most ardent cord cutter sign up, at least in name, for cable. Technically speaking, these customers are pay-TV subscribers since Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX  ) HBO still requires at least a small cable package to subscribe to. Bundles like this one with AT&T and a similar one with Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA  ) could provide HBO with the market testing it needs to move over the top, though. It's a delicate balance.
