Whereas in the 1970s there were limited ways to hedge against inflation, now there is a cornucopia of currency and international commodities instruments that can not only hedge against inflation but other global shocks, such as market bubbles and even war.
And it is these very scenarios that investors have been worried about. Since the beginning of the year, stocks, bonds and just about any investment you can think of have gyrated wildly at various times amid concerns of war, inflation and the possibility that the U.S. equity market is overvalued and headed for a correction.
In response, some market analysts in Bloomberg news reports have offered any number of wildly unsubstantiated statements for why investors should ignore today’s perils. They dismiss the danger posed by Russia annexation of Ukraine Crimea region (utin will stop short of other countries or war with the West. They also argue that the Federal Reserve chairwoman misspoke (anet Yellen really didn mean a rate hike is coming soon. Inflation is under control. It was a rookie mistake.
For my money, here’s the most outrageous: The Shiller Cyclically adjusted P/E metric which has predicted the 1929, 2000 and 2007 downturns doesn apply (uggests only a slightly expensive market with low to moderate returns going forward on average.
With new records being set by the S&P 500 in the last few months, it stands to reason that some investors have not needed much convincing to stay all in and buying. This mindset has prevailed, even as the impact of a Russian war or conflict, runaway inflation or a market correction could be devastating to investor portfolios, taking years to recover.
If youe never thought of certain investments as “insurance,” it time to start now. Protecting wealth is as important as building wealth. And as previously mentioned, we have found that the Inflation Survival Letter Thri

Today, I plan to introduce the third of 10 selections to the Basic Needs Portfolio: NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE ) .
How it fits with our theme
Of all the companies I will profile in this series on basic-needs stocks, perhaps none fits the bill more perfectly than NextEra Energy, which engages in the generation, transmission, and sale of electric energy in the United States. Unless you plan on living your life in the woods, chances are that electricity has become a basic necessity of your life. We need it for our homes to power our lights, stove, refrigerator and central air, just as enterprises and government agencies need it to power their vast infrastructure. With the demand for electricity consistent in almost any economic environment (both booming and recessionary), electricity price remain inelastic -- a telltale sign of a necessity product. - [By Justin Loiseau]
NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE ) announced in April that its ownnuclear uprate exceeded expectations, adding another 500 MW of capacity instead of the original 400 MW project. As the largest wind producer in the nation, NextEra is also nabbing efficiencies on some of its newer projects. According to NextEra's Florida Power & Light president, Eric Silagy, "[this] investment added the equivalent of a new, medium-sized power plant to Florida's generation fleet, without having to build one."

2. Renewables are ramping up
Wind and solar generation more than doubled during the president's first term, and it doesn't look to be letting up anytime soon. NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE ) recently celebrated its 10,000 net MW of wind power, but it could be in the market for much more with new goals to accelerate clean energy permitting. In addition to a recent production tax credit extension, the president has set a goal to issue another 10,000 MW in renewables permits on public land by the end of the year.

Elsewhere, losers were few and far between, but many gold stocks remained under pressure as the yellow metal only managed a modest bounce after yesterday's plunge. In particular, major producer Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX ) and gold miner IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG ) fell between 4% and 5%. Both companies were on the list of holdings of billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson's gold fund as of Dec. 31, and with rumors circulating that Paulson may have to liquidate positions to handle coming redemption requests, the stocks that he reportedly owns could see further selling pressure even if gold bullion prices rise.

David Goldman/AP The post office expects to deliver nearly 15 billion pieces of mail and 420 million packages during the holiday season. The U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday that it expects letters to decline slightly while package deliveries between Thanksgiving and Dec. 31 will rise 12 percent over last year. The calendar could make letter carriers' jobs tougher. Thanksgiving Day, the traditional kickoff to the peak season, is six days later this year, on Nov. 28. "It'll be an interesting year this year. You'll have that volume crowded into four weeks instead of five," Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in an interview. "We'll be able to handle it." The post office is adding 8,000 to 10,000 seasonal workers, Donahoe said. The busiest mailing day is expected to be Monday, Dec. 16, and the busiest day for packages to be Thursday, Dec. 19. Package deliveries are rising as more consumers shop online. United Parcel Service Co. (UPS) expects daily volume during the holidays to increase 8 percent, and FedEx Corp. (FDX) predicts a 13 percent rise during the busiest week in early December. The Postal Service is looking to increase sales online, which enable customers print shipping labels and buy postage at home. It's also selling a special holiday stamp featuring gingerbread houses, but there might be fewer people using it. "Greeting cards are fairly stable," Donahoe said. "You might lose a [percentage] point or two [compared with last year], but it's not a real big change." We're not saying you should give up shopping on Black Friday altogether. Just do it online instead. At one point it may have been true that Black Friday was for in-store deals, while Cyber Monday was for the e-commerce set. But these days, retailers are taking pains to offer a seamless experience between their online and bricks-and-mortar channels, and that means many of the marquee Black Friday deals can be had from the comfort of your couch. While, e-commerce has sabotaged the high revenue times of the brick-and-mortar retailers and left them with squeezed margins, it has done well for another industry. I am talking about the supply chain and cargo industry, which has gained from this surge in e-commerce as it has expanded reach and brought affordability to many households. One of the companies in this industry that has benefitted by this trend and has been on the high horse since the beginning of the year, is FedEx (FDX). This betterment in operations and increasing confidence of investors is evidenced by the 30% surge in stock price over the last 12 months. The company, founded in 1971 and based in Memphis, Tennessee, had a great earnings report recently and, going into the Christmas season, would appear to be a nice play for investors.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Roberto Pedone]
A pharmaceutical player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is IntelliPharmaCeutics (IPCI), which specializing in the research, development and manufacture of generic controlled-release and targeted-release oral solid dosage drugs. This stock has been on fire over the last three months, with shares up a whopping 99%.
If you take a look at the chart for IntelliPharmaCeutics, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending a bit over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low f $3.12 to its recent high of $4.37 a share. During that uptrend, shares of IPCI have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of IPCI within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IPCI if it manages to break out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.37 to $4.62 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.31 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then IPCI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $6.46 a share.
Traders can look to buy IPCI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $3.36 or at its 50-day moving average of $3.13 a share. One could also buy IPCI off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
