5 Best Heal Care Stocks To Invest In Right Now

J.C. Penney shares plunged more than 10% in early trading Friday before recovering slightly after the struggling retailer announced a stock offering that could raise as much as $932 million to fund the department store chain's turnaround effort.

The Plano, Texas-based firm said the offering would be priced at $9.65 a share. That represents a nearly 7.4% discount to Penney's Thursday closing price of $10.42 a share.

At that price, the offering could raise roughly $810.6 million. But the offering, run by investment bank Goldman Sachs, could raise additional cash if underwriters exercise a 30-day option to purchase an additional 12.6 billion shares, according to the company announcement.

FRIDAY: How markets are doing

The stock offering is expected to close on Tuesday, and proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, the company said.

On Feb. 3, the billionaire investor George Soros (Trades, Portfolio) bought Polycom Inc. (PLCM) at an average price of $11.72 and currently holds 9,400,708 shares of the stock. This trade makes me feel that he is betting in favor of the communications equipment sub-industry. So let's take a look at this company and try to explain to investors the reasons this is an apparently appealing investment opportunity in an industry that is becoming concentrated and globalized, dominated by large players like Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Answer: It’s too soon to say what the financial impact of the Winnipeg incident will have on TransCanada. The impact for its customers, including Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and Great Plains Energy (NYSE: GXP), may be more acute in the short term. TransCanada will definitely be under increased regulatory scrutiny.
I’m a fan of TransCanada for the long term. It has a solid, diverse and growing presence in North American energy infrastructure. It’s about much more than Keystone XL.

    Reeling in rates
Great Plains Energy (NYSE: GXP  ) shares are up 18.3% in the past year, a sign that something's going right for this Missouri/Kansas utility company. Fiscal 2013 EPS bumped up 8%, but the real gains came from regulation risk reduction. After filing for rate increases in early 2012, Great Plains got the green light from regulators to boost its 2013 prices. On the unregulated front, the utility generates 83% of its electricity from coal and 14% from nuclear power, a (recently revealed) welcome relief from natural gas' rapidly rising prices.

When I shed USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NYSE:USNA) from my hypothetical portfolio yesterday, I wasn't necessary in a hurry to replace it with a different pick. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't fill in the slot that USNA left behind with another idea if the right opportunity came along. Well, the right opportunity came along. I'm adding Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR) to my position list, at the same 5% allocation that USANA Health Sciences had.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Stephen Simpson, CFA]

Along those lines, neither ITT, RBC Bearings, nor Kaman (KAMN) are up much on this news - some of that may be due to the fact that the whole space (including Kaydon) was near a 52-week high, but some of it may also be due to the fact that Kaydon was a pretty rare asset in the space and there likely aren't enough strategic buyers to justify pumping up the fair values of those companies on the basis of what a strategic acquirer could (or might) pay.

Bloomfield, Conn.-based Kaman Corporation (NYSE: KAMN  ) will have a new Chief Financial Officer soon.

On Thursday, the aircraft parts-maker announced that when current CFO William C. Denninger retires on June 30, he will quickly be succeeded (the very next day, in fact) by newly promoted Senior Vice President and CFO Robert D. Starr.

What do small cap stocks MKS Instruments, Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI), Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. (NYSE:SKT), and Kaman Corporation (NYSE:KAMN) have in common? Absolutely nothing, on the surface, and no, it's not a setup for painfully bad punchline. There is a common thread among KAMN, SKT, and MKSI right now, however... they're all three going into my mental (though publicly-tracked) portfolio this afternoon.
