Poor Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) . After seeing its share price rise spectacularly in the week prior to its first-quarter earnings report, the stock took a real drubbing immediately after that report was issued. Today, it is getting beat up anew, and I think it is still feeling the consternation of investors about its less-than-sparkly earnings announcement.
Was the report really that bad? Sure, there were weak points, such as mortgage banking malaise, as well as continuing legal hassles in regards to its Countrywide smudge pot of stinky legacy loans. But there were bright spots, too: The streamlining process is working, and B of A has reduced nonperforming assets by $5 billion year over year. Plus, its Bank of America Merrill Lynch division is kicking butt, bringing home the bacon to the tune of $3.68 billion-- a 7% boost from the year-ago quarter's $3.44 billion.
So, why is the share price still falling by mid-morning, having lost 0.68% since the opening bell? Softness in the financial sector as a whole is surely at work here, as the Dow (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) has been somewhat grumpy itself this Monday morning and now sits 0.12% lower than it did at the open of business today.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jonas Elmerraji]
2014 has been a challenging year for shares of American Realty Capital Properties (ARCP). Since the calendar flipped to January, this commercial real estate name has dropped by 6% and change, underperforming the rest of the REIT space in dramatic fashion. But with event risk largely shaken out of ARCP, this landlord is starting to look like an interesting, if speculative, bet. Last quarter, funds picked up a whopping 383.99 million shares of ARCP, a buy operation that amounts to 42% of this firm's outstanding shares. That's a conviction bet if ever there was one.
ARCP invests in single-tenant commercial properties, with a portfolio that includes everything from retail restaurant space to office buildings. The firm recently made news when it announced that it was planning on selling essentially all of its shopping center assets to Blackstone Group (BX) for $1.975 billion, rather than unloading those shopping centers through a spinoff. Simultaneously, the firm plans to use the proceeds of the Blackstone deal to fund a major sale-leaseback transaction in Red Lobster restaurants for $1.5 billion. Shares dropped hard on news of the change in course, but now that they've settled, this stock could be a particularly solid name for income-seekers who aren't exceptionally risk-averse.
Right now, ARCP pays out an 8.33-cent monthly dividend, a payout that adds up to a massive 8.3% yield at current levels. That big payout should continue to hold significant appeal as interest rates stay constrained near zero.

The most recent Triple-Net deal in play with Cole Credit Property Trust III (CCPT3) has created a bidding war in which two arch rivals - Cole Holdings and American Realty Capital Properties (ARCP) - are pumping fists at each other in hopes to win the prized REIT - CCPT3 - that owns 1,014 properties in 47 states. Recently I wrote an article describing the playground battle in progress:
- [By Dividend Growth Investor]
American Realty Capital Properties, Inc. (ARCP) owns and acquires single tenant, freestanding commercial real estate that is net leased on a medium-term basis, primarily to investment grade credit rated and other creditworthy tenants. I like the fact that management is aggressively purchasing assets, acquiring companies and working towards increasing Funds from Operations for shareholder distributions. I can easily view this REIT becoming the next Realty Income in a few years. The risk of course is that they overpay for acquisitions, and this ends up costing existing shareholders big time. The REIT has raised dividends since going public in 2011. This REIT currently yields 6.20%.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Russ Koesterich]
The list above is based on my team's analysis of whether sector valuations appropriately price in each sector's expected earnings growth, profitability and risk. Based on these factors, I have a preference for the energy and informational technology sectors, accessible through the iShares S&P Global Energy Sector Fund (IXC) and the iShares S&P Global Technology Sector Fund (IXN). And as I write in my new Investment Directions commentary piece, if it turns out that we do see more investors rotating out of defensives and into more attractively priced cyclicals, these two sectors are poised to especially benefit.
