Top Sliver Stocks To Own For 2014

Shares ofBoeing (BA) hit some turbulence entering 2014, but the stock should resume its climb, according to Sterne Agee.

Sterne Agee’s Peter Arment and team explain why the think investors should “buy[Boeing] on this pullback:”

We reiterate our price target for [Boeing] of $164 (~13x 2015 FCF per share), based on very favorable FCF over the next several years. With the long-term cash story still intact, despite 2014 headwinds, we believe a 13x-15x multiple range on 2015 estimates is very reasonable given peak cash generation is still two years later in 2017. Historically,[Boeing] has been able to support a 10-12x peak FCF multiple during production upcycles. We believe this again will occur as BCA ramps production through mid decade. Additionally, with ~5,100 aircraft in backlog[Boeing] has tremendous visibility and flexibility within the production skyline that should result in sustained healthy valuation given the longevity of this aerospace cycle. We do not believe there is a production bubble given the replacement requirements and the impact of elevated fuel prices driving airlines globally to operate fuel-efficient fleets. While the[Boeing] stock was up 80% in 2013, we expect[Boeing] to recover from this current weakness in the near term as investors continue to put money to work in a mega-cap industrial with significant visibility and commencing harvest mode of the major aircraft investment cycle from 2004 to 2011.

    Speaking of results ...
Right now, quarterly earnings season is well under way, which provides a perfect opportunity for one of those "check in from time to time" moments. While the iPIG portfolio did nothing last week, several of its picks did report, and those quarterly confessionals can help determine whether the companies are still worth owning. To summarize key results:

United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) reported decent numbers, with net earnings ahead of expectations but growth driven more by acquisitions than by organic improvements in its existing businesses. Given the company's conglomerate setup, growth by bolt-on acquisitions isn't surprising, but over the long haul, it'd be better to see its businesses growing internally as well as through acquisitions. The news at Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) wasn't quite as good, with both revenues and net earnings falling from year ago levels on a tough environment for the mining businesses it supports. That's a risk well known to the company and its shareholders, though, and while the weaker results did knock the company's stock down, the business has ridden through tough cycles before. It looks capable of riding through this one, too. Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS  ) , on the other hand, reported earnings that beat expectations on an operating basis, before restructuring charges knocked it down to a net loss. Given that the company is in the very seasonal toy business, that loss in an off-peak quarter is much less of a concern than it would have been in the make-or-break holiday quarter. UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) kept on trucking, with a better-than-expected January and strength from eCommerce helping the company turn in an 8% growth in net reported earnings per share. Overall, UPS is operating efficiently, though its future success is tied to its ability to continue delivering more packages. As long as its e-commerce business continues to grow, though, UPS is wel

Two of those companies, railroad tycoon CSX (NYSE: CSX  ) and safety equipment provider Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) , paid out higher per-share amounts than they did last quarter. Both raised their payments by about 7% -- with CSX's moving from $0.14 to $0.15 per share and Mine Safety Appliances' rising from $0.28 to $0.30.

The third biggest gainer for the IPIG portfolio last week was safety-equipment purveyor Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) , which also rose on its earnings news. Mine Safety Appliances' numbers were pretty strong, once you backed out the impact of currency fluctuations and a divestiture, and the market rewarded the company for those results. Solid results like that are also a decent reason for a company's stock to rise, but of course, what the company delivers in the future will drive where its stock goes next.

No industry likes seeing more regulations — except for those firms that help energy companies comply with those new rules. In the oil and gas industry that would be Mine Safety Appliances (MSA).
